Africa Café is a popular spot for both locals and tourists who are looking for a uniquely African dining experience. The general ambience calls for a large group of friends, but even if it’s just the two of you, you’ll enjoy a presentation of colourful ceramic bowls, each filled with a delicious, steaming-hot traditional African dish.
Dishes on the set menu include ostrich curry, stuffed papaya, and sweet potato and cheese balls, providing guests with dishes from various countries in an African tasting platter.
Africa Café proudly holds the title of Cape Town’s first authentic African restaurant, having been established during South Africa’s rocky political climate in 1992. Due to tight funding at the time, Africa Café originally operated out of the owners’ family home in Woodstock but has since grown into a beautiful multi-level restaurant in Heritage Square. The restaurant has been decorated to compliment the menu, with each room dedicated to a different country or tribe, including Ndebele, Zulu, and Moroccan.
It’s the special touches that make Africa Café such a memorable restaurant in foodie-centric Cape Town, as well as the interactive traditional entertainment delighting guests through the meal. Have your hands gently washed with rose-scented water before eating, and enjoy the vibe brought by traditionally clad and jovial staff. There is also a delightful deli on site for keepsakes, health foods and interesting African ingredients.
