What and Where to Eat Halaal food in Cape Town

In Cape Town, there are plenty of restaurants and cafés that cater for visitors and residents who prefer their meals cooked according to Halaal standards.

What to Eat

Cape Malay cuisine was born of the cookery that Middle Eastern slaves brought to the Cape. It is a signature Cape culinary style, typically spicy but can also be sweet.  It includes dishes such as curries, sambals, fish stews, bobotie (spiced mincemeat baked with an egg-based topping), bredies (a meat and vegetable stew) and sosaties (skewered meat).

Indian cuisine is another favourite in South Africa and Indian restaurants have become very popular, offering an enormous variety of hot curries, samoosas, atjars and biryanis. Bunny chow is a South African-Indian dish originally from Durban that has been adapted into mainstream South African cuisine. It is half loaf of bread with its centre scooped out and filled with your choice of curry. You typically eat with your hands using the centre of the bread loaf to dip into the curry.
