Cape Town Tourism nominated as one of Top Ten at SA Blog Awards

Cape Town Tourism’s recently launched blog www.capetown.travel/blog has been selected as one of the ten finalists in no less than two categories at this year’s SA Blog Awards. Cape Town Tourism’s blog was chosen from over 4 000 entrants, for Best Group Blog (with more than one author) and Best Travel Blog, for the best travel-related content; a significant achievement for a blog that was only launched in December 2008.

Public voting in the annual 2009 South African Blog Awards are well under way with a record number of nominations and voters. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony, which takes place on 3 April 2009, at Chevelle nightclub in Cape Town.

As an official organization, Cape Town Tourism has successfully managed to adopt the social platform of blogging as one of the multi-faceted touch points on their recently revamped site. Authenticity is key to the blog experience and this has been upheld by Cape Town Tourism’s attitude to their blog. The various bloggers who write for the site are people passionate about Cape Town and they are encouraged to write about the things that occupy them and amuse them. They exemplify Cape Town Tourism’s Cape Town; Live It, Love It mantra through the experiences they share on their blog-posts.

Cape Town Tourism CEO Mariette du-Toit Helmbold summarises the intention of the blog, “We want visitors to our site to be able to access the real Cape Town and our blog provides a window on the lives of people who live here. Authenticity is one of Cape Town’s most precious resources, we have a beautiful, real and exciting destination.”

Other interesting aspects of Cape Town Tourism’s site include a Flickr Pic of the Day and an Itinerary Tool. This combined with the blog and various other functional aspects of the site has led to an increased visit duration to the Cape Town Tourism site.

The winners are voted for by the public and a select board of local judges in the online scene. This panel includes Rob Stokes, Heather Ford, Tertia Albertyn, Vincent Maher and Vinny Lingham who was recently selected as a Young Global Leader for 2009 by the World Economic Forum.
