Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival showdown

Soccer fans in the Mother City are looking forward to the Cape Derby between Santos and Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival on January 23 (16h00 kickoff), a fixture that has been keenly fought over the last decade.

The event, hosted by the City of Cape Town, organised by Stadium Operators SAIL STADEFRANCE and sponsored by Virgin Active Health Clubs and MTN, will see the first event at the brand new, R4.5-billion Cape Town Stadium with a day of football and festivities.

“MTN has long been a supporter of South African soccer and we are delighted to be part of this fantastic event to open magnificent new Cape Town Stadium. The facility is spectacular and we are certain that those fans who come out to support their teams will have an excellent day’s entertainment,” says Dudley Zikhali MTN Football Sponsorship Manager.

Santos and Ajax Cape Town are no strangers, being the Mother City’s two representatives in the Premier Soccer League, there will be plenty of local pride on offer when they meet in at the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival.

“We have a keen rivalry, but one that is built on mutual respect,” Santos chairman Goolam Allie says. “There have been some fantastic matches down the years which have been a credit to Cape football and we aim to put on a good show at the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival as well.”

These sentiments are echoed by Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitis.

“We are delighted to be part of such a prestigious and historic occasion for Cape Town and it is fitting that we should be taking on our great rivals at the opening of this wonderful stadium,” Comitis says. “We always enjoy playing Santos and are looking forward to another keenly-contested friendly match.”

The pair has met on 27 previous occasions in competitive action, with Ajax Cape Town claiming 12 wins, Santos 11 and four draws.

20 000 tickets were sold out on Friday the 15th January 2010 for the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival as organisers seek to test the stadium’s systems and processes by slowly building-up to the full 68 000 capacity.

The City of Cape Town will also be providing a FREE shuttle service from the Civic Centre in Hertzog Boulevard to the stadium and back, and all you need to do to use the facility, is present your match tickets.
