Be a Tourist in Your Own City during World Tourism Month

September is World Tourism Month and Cape Town Tourism, in partnership with Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and other top city attractions, is encouraging locals to experience their city as tourists through the ‘My Cape Town’ Campaign.
‘My Cape Town’ will run throughout the month of September, incorporating free vouchers worth half a million rand, plus special offers, great competitions and an exciting array of events at some of Cape Town’s iconic attractions. The ‘My Cape Town’ programme of events for World Tourism Month includes ‘My Cape Town Weekend’, in partnership with Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and other key attractions, over the long weekend of Friday 24 September (Heritage Day) to Monday 27 September (United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) World Tourism Day); ‘Celebrating Tourism and Diversity’ on World Tourism Day; and ‘Capture My Cape Town’, a photographic and video competition which runs throughout the month.
Thousands of free and discounted vouchers for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, City Sightseeing red bus, Two Oceans Aquarium, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, and more, will be distributed during the course of the month. The vouchers are valid from 24 September, the start of ‘My Cape Town Weekend’, until 31 October 2010. The campaign is also supported by SANparks, Robben Island, the V&A Waterfront, Cape Point, Ratanga Junction and Metrorail.
My Cape Town Weekend
The culmination of the month-long ‘My Cape Town’ campaign is ‘My Cape Town Weekend’, when locals will be encouraged to redeem their free vouchers (vouchers are valid from 24 September to 31 October 2010 to allow for flexibility) and to attend an abundance of free events in the city. The ‘My Cape Town’ Free Concert takes place at the V&A Waterfront on Friday, 24 September (featuring up-and-coming Cape Town band iScream and the Chocolate Stix, whose hit song ‘My Cape Town’ and music video is an online sensation) and there will be plenty of family friendly activities on offer during the 24th and 25th of September in the Company Gardens under the umbrella ‘My Cape Town in the Company Gardens’.
Details of special offers, giveaways and competitions will be promoted in select community newspapers and on Cape Town radio stations, and will be posted on Cape Town Tourism’s website www.capetown.travel/mycapetown from 1 September 2010.
Capture My Cape Town Competition
As an added incentive to being a tourist in your own town, Cape Town Tourism is running a photographic and video competition called ‘Capture My Cape Town’. With entry channels spanning MMS, Flickr and Facebook, the competition is open to both amateurs and professionals. Prizes for unique images and videos of Cape Town include cash totalling R 30 000 and Hoerikwaggo Luxury Trail experiences. Entries can be posted online via www.capetown.travel/mycapetown

World Tourism Day – Celebrating Tourism and Biodiversity
The global theme of UNWTO World Tourism Day 2010 is ‘tourism and *biodiversity’, and Cape Town Tourism’s ‘My Cape Town’ campaign will be promoting environmental awareness throughout the month of September. Cape Town relies on its biodiversity to provide an exceptional natural environment and healthy leisure activities for both locals and tourists, and so conservation is key – of both our natural and cultural assets.
