Ballet with an African theme at Artscape Theatre this October

31 August, 2010

The Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) will present a spring double bill featuring Le Corsaire and African Landcapes at the Artscape Theatre from 21-29 October, 2010. Ticket prices range from R70 to R120. Book at Computicket and Dial-a Seat.

Le Corsaire will be a new presentation displaying some of the rarely seen dances from one of Petipa’s great classical ballets. Newcomer to the CTCB and up-and-coming senior soloist, Kim Vieira, can be seen in the pas de tois alongside Lauren Rogers and Angela Hansford. Laura Bosenberg takes on the role of Medora, performing a pas de deux with Thomas Thorne, who dances the role of Conrad. In an alternate cast, audiences can see Jon Savage in the role of Conrad. Savage recently joined the CTCB after graduating from the Royal Ballet School in London.

African Landcapes portrays a leopard’s terror as she witnesses her shrinking habitat. Even the Khoisan vacate their traditional homelands and trek to the urban jungle, where the blue cranes become fewer, water resources are under pressure and the ever-present threat of fire dominates the landscape.

This ballet draws in elements that depict urbanisation and our nation’s heritage, and features Megan Swart as Fire, Angela Hansford as the Leopard and Laura Bosenberg as the Blue Crane. The music for African Landscapes is by iconic South African bands and artists and promises to be a unique work certain to attract a diverse audience.
