It’s the season to Give Responsibly - CCID launches SMS donation service to help the homeless in the

The Cape Town Central Improvement District (CCID) has launched an SMS donation service as part of its Give Responsibly campaign in an effort to help break the cycle of homelessness on the city’s streets. The SMS line forms part of the augmented Give Responsibly campaign and offers the public an alternative way of donating money to people living on the streets of Cape Town. The donations will be disbursed to various city NGOs that already do great work in helping to change the lives of the homeless by providing shelter, food, social services and rehabilitation programmes.

Responsible tourism in Cape Town, South Africa

Responsible tourism is tourism “that creates better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit”.

In 2002, representatives from tourism sectors in 20 countries attended the Cape Town Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, at which a declaration on responsible tourism was agreed upon.

In 2009, the City of Cape Town adopted the Responsible Tourism Policy and Action Plan, which commits to adopting responsible tourism as an approach to destination management, to bring about positive economic, social, cultural, and environmental influences. It facilitates the city-wide adoption and implementation of responsible tourism actions and serves as a decision-making reference point for divisions within the city, as well as for external stakeholders.

Cape Town joins the world in noting world responsible tourism day

The travel industry looks to the World Travel Market (WTM) event today to lead this year’s World Responsible Tourism Day (November 7) through a wealth of debates and presentations on conscious tourism practice, as well as the awarding of the 2012 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards (winners had not been announced at time of release).

Responsible Tourism is defined as tourism “that creates better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit”. One of the key challenges for Responsible Tourism identified at WTM is that of broadening access to destinations, particularly for the physically and economically disadvantaged. The conference also looked at ways in which various destinations were regulating and communicating their Responsible Tourism practice.
