Monday, September 27, was World Tourism Day, a day earmarked by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation to celebrate the benefits of tourism. The focus of this day in 2010 was to raise awareness around the connection between tourism and biodiversity.

Monday September 27 is World Tourism Day – a day earmarked by the United Nations each year to raise awareness and celebrate the benefits of tourism. This year’s theme focuses on the importance of biodiversity and sustainable practices in tourism.

Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk, the Minister of Tourism, was the first person to use his cell phone today to vote for Table Mountain to be recognised as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

One of the Mother City’s biggest annual attractions – the Cape Town Air Show – is set for liftoff at the Ysterplaat Air Base on September 21, 2010.

As part of Cape Town Tourism’s My Cape Town Weekend programme, and in celebration of Iziko Heritage Week (September 20 – 26, 2010), Cape Town’s Company’s Garden will be offering a series of special events on the long weekend of September 24 – 26, 2010. 

In celebration of My Cape Town http://www.capetown.travel/mycapetown and World Tourism Month this September, Cape Town Tourism has put out a call to all photographers and filmmakers to enter the photographic competition Capture My Cape Town. From MMS mavericks and doccie dramatists to pictorial pros and point-and-shoot enthusiasts, the Capture My Cape Town competition invites Capetonians of all skill levels to capture the Cape Town they live in and the Cape Town they may discover anew during My Cape Town month.

The year 2010 has been earmarked by the United Nations as the International Year of Biodiversity*, with many countries around the world celebrating this theme throughout the month of September, and particularly on World Tourism Day (September 27th ) when the idea of tourism and biodiversity is examined.

September is World Tourism Month and Cape Town Tourism, in partnership with Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and other top city attractions, is encouraging locals to experience their city as tourists through the ‘My Cape Town’ Campaign.
