Design is more than architecture, clothes and jewellery – it is also about bridging the divide between communities, offering sustainable solutions and being innovative.

The Mother City is the World Design Capital 2014, and over the next year designers will have an opportunity to showcase their projects. Cape Town Design, the non-profit company established to implement WDC CT 2014, has called for proposals to show how design can be used to transform lives.

The closing date for submissions was April 5, 2013. The overarching central theme is "Live Design. Transform Life". There are then four themes for designers to choose from: African Innovation, Global Conversations; Bridging the Divide; Today for Tomorrow; and Beautiful Spaces, Beautiful Things.

Cape Town Tourism submitted proposals related to our Visitors’ Guide, mobile Visitor Services function, and design-related itineraries for hosting local and international media during 2014.

Successful projects will be promoted by Cape Town Design, nationally and internationally, under the WDC CT 2014 banner. The second and final call for submissions will open in July 2013.

Successful designs will be given official recognition as WDC 2014 projects and will be included in the programme of events for the year. The calendar of events will be released at a later date – visit to learn more.
