#LoveCapeTown this World Tourism Month

World Tourism Day (WTD) is celebrated annually on September 27 and its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism as well as its social, cultural, political and economic value.

Under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development”, WTD 2012 highlights the need to bring the tourism sector and energy stakeholders closer together to spur tourism’s contribution to sustainability.

Official WTD celebrations will include a High-Level Think Tank on the 2012 theme, at which public and private tourism stakeholders will join leaders from the energy sector to further the use of sustainable energy in the tourism sector. 

Cape Town Tourism will continue our tradition of hosting a month-long campaign during September to inspire citizens to explore and enjoy their city, by showcasing the accessibility and affordability of Cape Town. This will not only activate locals to talk about why they love and care for Cape Town, it will also educate stakeholders and the industry on the importance of responsible tourism and sustainable energy.

The campaign will consist of four main elements:

1. #LoveCapeTown photo competition

An online photographic competition on www.capetown.travel that conveys the vibrancy, hidden gems and beautiful people of our city. The winning photographer will be awarded R10 000 in cash. Visit www.capetown.travel and forward the entry details to any of your budding photographer friends. 

2. #LoveCapeTown deals

A hub of value-driven deals and free giveaways from a number of sources on www.capetown.travel that locals can use to explore and enjoy their city during September. These deals will be communicated via social media mechanisms, including a #LoveCapeTown Twitter deal of the day. Click here to read more about how you can participate. 

3. #LoveCapeTown radio competition and #LoveCapeTown Day

A radio competition with Heart 104.9 FM that encourages listeners to phone in and talk about why they love Cape Town and how they care for the city. The winners will receive tickets to the #LoveCapeTown Day on Saturday September 29, where they will be taken on a tour of Cape Town’s best sights on a City Sightseeing open top bus.

4. World Tourism Day media event

A township tour on bicycles for 20 people with representatives from the City of Cape Town, government, the tourism industry and media that stimulates media-worthy discussion around the World Tourism Day theme and local communities.
