Arrivals from Asia way up in September
According to Southern African Tourism Update Online, arrival statistics for September 2009 show a marked year-on-year increase in arrivals from India, China and other Asian markets. The statistics released by Statistics South Africa show a 31,1% increase in arrivals from India and 25,4% growth in arrivals from China.
European markets are not far behind. Arrivals from Italy and Belgium increased by 21,8% and 11,4% respectively.
It is encouraging to note that total overseas arrivals increased from 155 394 in September 2008 to 161 072 this September – an overall increase of 3,5%.
According to Southern African Tourism Update Online, the top 10 source markets for September 2009 (compared to September 2008) are:
- UK, up 6,6% from 29 976 to 32 092
- USA, down 3,7% from 21 590 to 20 826
- Germany, down 12,2% from 17 377 to 15 483
- The Netherlands, down 1,4% from 10 193 to 10 048
- France, up 0,5% from 7 414 to 7 455
- India, up 31,3% from 3 888 to 5 642
- Italy, up 21,8% from 4 148 to 5 302
- China, up 25,4% from 2 882 to 3 861
- Canada, down 1,4% from 3 842 to 3 790
- Belgium, up 11,4% from 3 212 to 3 624
