2010 FIFA World Cup™
Cape Town successfully hosted eight matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ from June 11 to July 11, 2010 in the beautiful Cape Town Stadium. We were proud to be one of the nine Host Cities and played superb hosts to all visitors.
Cape Town Tourism’s 2010 FIFA World Cup™ marketing programme was called Live it. Love it. LOUDER! This programme aimed to raise local enthusiasm and pride to an all-time high ahead of our role as 2010 Host City.
A dedicated website (www.capetown.travel/2010) was available as a resource for visitors and locals. This site was regularly updated with marketing activities, readiness reports, images, news and frequently asked questions on topics such as stadiums, tickets and transport. There was also a database of all accommodation providers that are members of Cape Town Tourism. A monthly emailer was sent to members with updates on progress.
Our commitment to the industry is to continue working together to ensure that the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ becomes a legacy for tourism growth and to maximise the positive effect on all businesses, small or large.
You may still find it useful to download the overviews of the habits of various nationalities and cultures. These overviews were used by the Bavarian hospitality sector as part of their preparation for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. We would like to thank Nils Heckscher, MD of the Winchester Mansions Hotel, for translating these and making them available to members. Thank you too to Conrad Maier, past Chair of the Bavarian Hospitality Association, for sharing them with Nils.
What Other cities are doing
One of the main tourism developments across other Host Cities is the implementation of Visitor Information Centres to ensure that tourists get the relevant information and advice. Centres have been opened in Rustenburg, Port Elizabeth and Polokwane. Two more centres are planned for Bloemfontein and Nelspruit.
These centres aim to provide visitors with a one-stop service on a wide range of tourism products, including information on accommodation, tours, vehicle hire, entertainment, dining, sports, adventure, shopping and travel tips. The visitor centres also use web-based and touch-screen technology to assist with information and booking enquiries.
The Cape Town Tourism business and service delivery model was used to develop these centres.
Other major developments across the Host Cities are:
- Improved transport infrastructure, including upgraded airports, trains, buses and roads
- Improved stadium facilities
- Improved safety and security infrastructure and resources
- Improved event facilities
