The city has a Smart Events Handbook, which provides guidelines on how to organise events in an environmentally and socially responsible way. It can be used for a range of events, including meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
Below are some examples of the type of events that Cape Town hosts:
Cape Town hosted the world’s largest sporting event, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, from June 11 to July 11, 2010. The Cape Town Stadium (which seats 55 000) hosted eight matches, including a semi-final.
The Newlands Rugby Stadium (which seats 51 900 people) hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup, and the Sahara Park Newlands Cricket Stadium (which seats 25 000 people) hosted the 2003 Cricket World Cup and 2009 Indian Premier League cricket tournament.
Cape Town also hosts various annual sporting events, as well as numerous other international football, cricket, tennis, rugby, hockey and cycling events.
Major events include:
- The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, the largest individually timed cycling event in the world, catering for more than 30 000 cyclists.
- Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, which attracts close to 26 000 participants for the scenic 56km ultra and 21km half marathons as well as the 5km or 2.5km fun runs.
- The Absa Cape Epic, a 900km route which starts and ends in Cape Town and is the most widely broadcast mountain bike event in the world.
- The Red Bull Big Wave Africa, the world’s second-longest-running big wave surfing event takes place at the Dungeons Reef at the mouth of Hout Bay in Cape Town, renowned for its ability to produce the biggest rideable waves on the coast of Africa.
Design and fashion events
Design and fashion events hosted in Cape Town are among the best in the world.
Cape Town Fashion Week is an internationally recognised, annual event which displays the talent of South African fashion designers and gorgeous local models.
Music, cultural and theatre events
The Cape Town Jazz Festival, and the Kirstenbosch Summer concerts are just two examples of annual music events in Cape Town. Many of the world’s biggest pop and rock stars choose to perform at various venues in Cape Town.
The city also hosts a variety of cultural events every week, with arts festivals and film festivals, such as Sitengi, which feature prominently.
Cape Town has a variety of theatres where events are always on the go. These multi-cultural theatres offer the best of South African theatre and often also host international productions.
