From the CEO - Love Your Winter

Being voted second only to New York as the world’s Best Restaurant City is an enormous coup for Cape Town, but the accolade is even sweeter when twinned with another. International TripAdvisor users also voted Cape Town as the number two spot for the world’s Most Helpful Locals.

This good news was received earlier this month when the results of the TripAdvisor World City Survey 2014 were released. The best thing about this sort of recognition is that it comes from the experience of users of the destination; people who have been to the establishments, used the service providers and walked the city streets. Essentially these are your awards.

As we find ourselves in winter, I have been thinking about how the traveller experiences a Cape Town winter. Capetonians are well known for their moans and gripes about the cooler weather but it is in winter that Cape Town can be at its most extraordinary. As the Tripadvisor reviewers have undoubtedly affirmed, gourmet Cape Town is a sensory celebration and winter is the time to experience it at a fraction of the price.

I am sure that many of you are also offering tempting winter packages and ultimately this means excellent value for money abounds in winter.  Add to this the fact that outdoor adventure calls from the sea to the mountains and that the city is fresh and green. We are also spoilt for choice when it comes to events, exhibitions, gatherings and shows and it’s the perfect time for a bit of pampering and shopping.

New York and London are not seasonal destinations. No one considers the weather when the offering is a rich cultural, urban spectacle. Cape Town is chasing them up the lists! So the next time you’re about to carelessly drop a remark about the “miserable weather”, think again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
