CEO Blog - A Big Year for Cape Town and South Africa
2014 has begun and Cape Town is now officially World Design Capital. The year got off to a spectacular start as 80 000 spectators witnessed a show of lights and music on Cape Town’s Grand Parade to usher in our World Design Capital year.
We then rolled directly into The Orange African Nations Championship (CHAN) a football tournament that celebrates the talent and passion of the African continent and brings back the 2010 World Cup gees with the energetic sound of the vuvuzela.
It’s not going to stop there with major calendar events like the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Design Indaba, the ABSA Cape Epic and the Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Race on our doorstep there is much to look forward to. There has never been a better time to tell our story. Being a World Design Capital will take us into a design-minded era towards greater re-integration and equality for Cape Town and South Africa; indeed it is a fitting way to mark both the legacy of the great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and to mark our country’s twentieth year of democracy.
Add to the mix that The Guardian has just voted Cape Town number one in their Holiday Hotspots: Where to go to in 2014, and all the ingredients are just right for a great year in tourism.
