CEO Blog - Lessons from Listening

For some months now I have been listening. I have been going to meetings and events, workshops and gatherings – all with the purpose of listening carefully to what it is the tourism industry is thinking. Through this process I have come to meet many extraordinary people - sharing in their ideas and hopes for the future of our industry. I would like to begin reflecting on these encounters and my observations on tourism globally and locally through my blog.


Having just returned from World Travel Market 2013 in London, I am energised by the great appetite that clearly exists for Cape Town; not only with our traditional source markets like the UK, but also in new markets such as India, Nigeria, Brazil and Sweden. World Design Capital 2014 presents a great opportunity to showcase urban Cape Town to the world and tour operators are hungry to know more about the events and tours that our World Design Capital 2014 year will bring to the mix.


I know some of our members are already gearing up to offer exciting design and sustainability experiences for WDC2014. In South Africa, we are also celebrating twenty years of democracy and we will be taking visitors through our unique legacy with tours celebrating Madiba - amongst others.


It’s always a great time to visit Cape Town but 2014 is perhaps one of the best times ever; a fact that was recently acknowledged by Lonely Planet when they made Cape Town Number 3 on their Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014 Top Cities list.
