CEO Blog - A Day on the Beach and a Call for Legacy

Children from Touwsriver enjoying their first trip to the beach.

On the 5th of December 2013, Cape Town Tourism team members Kirsti Lee November and Odwa Gushu accompanied about 40 children between the ages of 6 and 18 years old who had come from Touwsriver to Muizenberg beach as part of the Touwsriver NG Church Sunday School trip. Here is what our team had to say;

“For many of them it was the first time coming to the beach and the excitement in their faces is something that cannot be described. The trip to the beach is something that they have been looking forward to for a long time and is certainly an experience that they will not forget anytime soon.

Living in Cape Town, the beach is something that we take for granted every day, as it is just something that we have grown up with and is filled with memories of family outings and hot summer days. Cape Town has eight Blue Flag beaches including Bikini Beach, Mnandi Beach, Strandfontein Beach, Muizenberg Beach, Llandudno Beach, Camps Bay and Clifton 4th, as well as Silwerstroomstrand, which gives us even more reason to #lovecapetown.

We asked one of the children if they had a message to send to the CEO of Cape Town Tourism, Enver Duminy, her response was; “He should be proud of this lovely city.”

And indeed I am but there is something that would make me even prouder.

In this week of tributes and the outpouring of love for Tata Madiba, I would like to call on you all to remember his love of children. He once stated so powerfully, “there is no keener revelation of a society’s soul, than the way it treats its children.”

How can each of us change the life of a child even if it is just by imprinting a happy memory such as a beach trip?
Whether it’s a special surprise, a commitment to volunteering at a literacy programme or kind words when most needed, let’s live Mandela’s legacy through the love and nurture of Cape Town’s children and make happy memories towards a better future in this lovely city of ours.

Why not start today by contributing towards the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund? SMS the word “CHILD” to 40555 to donate R20 that will help Madiba’s dream of building a children’s hospital in the Eastern Cape, come true. The power is in our hands.
