Around 35 000 cyclists are expected to compete in this year’s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Challenge, which will be held on March 14, starting from the Civic Centre.

The route will follow the M3 to Lakeside and then be diverted to Boyes Drive, rejoining the main road from Kalk Bay to Simon’s Town, continuing on to Ocean View and up Chapman’s Peak, and finishing at Green Point.

Away from the main event, there is plenty to for both cyclists and spectators. Cape Town Tourism has drawn up some suggestions:

“Carbo load” before the big event

Cape Town has a wide selection of wining and dining options, to suit all tastes and requirements.

For more information about where to eat in Cape Town, see our wining and dining section.

Get a massage

After completing the 109km cycle, you’re bound to have a few muscle aches that need taking care of, and if you are simply on holiday, you may want to spoil yourself with a little pampering.

Cape Town offers a wide range of spas, both in the city centre and surrounding areas, at which you can unwind.

It is advisable to book appointments in advance to avoid disappointment.

Have a day out with the family

If you are making the trip with the whole family, you may be looking for extra entertainment.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has taken nearly 20-million passengers to the top of Table Mountain since 1929, and is one of Cape Town’s most popular attractions. Table Mountain offers view that are second to none, as well as activities for people of all ages.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is another popular attraction that appeals to all members of the family.

For something different, you could visit the West Coast Ostrich Ranch.

Go shopping

Cape Town is a paradise for shopaholics, with so much to choose from.

Cape Town central features the famous V&A Waterfront and Greenmarket Square, among many others. If you are into arts and antiques, you could visit the Antiques Craft Market or the Linda Goodman Gallery.

If you are staying in the northern suburbs, you could visit the splendid Canal Walk or pop into Tygervalley Shopping Centre.

In the southern suburbs, Cavendish Square is one of several options.

For something different, head east to the Khayelitsha Craft Market.

Have a sundowner

Weather you’ve cycled in the big event, or offered your support at the roadside; you’ve earned yourself a drink.

With the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Challenge finishing in Green Point, Camps Bay and Clifton are two great options for entertainment afterward.

If you are staying in Cape Town central, Long Street and the V&A Waterfront offer a variety of vibrant establishments.
