Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) is a non-profit organisation that certifies tourism businesses for operating according to the principles of “fair trade”. FTTSA awards a special trademark (or label) to qualifying businesses as a way of signifying their commitment to these principles (fare share, democracy, respect, reliability, transparency, sustainability) and related criteria, including fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing, equitable distribution of benefits, ethical business practice and respect for human rights, culture and environment. FTTSA also works with tour operators through a logo-use agreement to market certified tourism products. By electing to stay at or use the services of a FTTSA certified establishment, tourists can be assured that their travel benefits local communities and economies, and that the business is operated ethically and in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Benefits to tourism businesses include enhanced market exposure as well as development benefits through improved business operations. FTTSA also offers two training courses, which target adult learners at a general level and at managerial/decision-making level. This offer will coincide with Cape Town Tourism’s membership year (i.e. from September 1 each year).
Discounts on training course
FTTSA will also offer 10% discount on the FTTSA 2-day Sustainable Tourism Workshop (normal price is R6 500). This training was developed with Project Literacy and is ideal for general staff to assist with implementing your sustainable tourism business practices.
Discount: 30% discount for first-time certifications! The first five businesses (new applications only) to become certified will receive a 30% discount on their initial annual user fee.
