World Design Capital 2014: Cape Town
Cape Town was this morning announced as the World Design Capital for 2014. The official announcement was made in Taipei, where the Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, accepted the honour. Capetonians were up early to hear the news and celebrations have been taking place throughout the Mother City and beyond.
Social networks have been buzzing as congratulations continue to pour in. "Well done to all the amazing and talented Capetonian designers of every field! How amazing,whoo-hoo!" was a comment posted on the I ♥ Cape Town Facebook page by Michelle Ment. Former Miss South Africa Jo-Ann Strauss wrote on Twitter: "Congrats
@MariettedTH – @CapeTown is #WDC2014 – World Design Capital! So proud to be from the Mother City!"
Cape Town Tourism PR and Communications Manager Skye Grove was also at the official announcement, along with other delegates from the Mother City. "The Cape Town team is extremely excited and is looking forward to returning home to the amazing citizen support received in the build-up and while here in Taipei," she said. Cape Town Tourism CEO Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold said: "Cape Town’s bid for the title of World Design Capital 2014 has showcased the important role design and the creative sector at large play in transforming a city, making it not just a great place to visit, but a greater place to live."
