WDC Events Worth Attending This Month

The second half of the year is in full swing and there are a number of World Design Capital events happening this month that promise to educate, entertain and inspire.

Date: 30 July – 2 August
Venue: City Hall

This lifestyle event aims at inviting the people of Cape Town to see the city in a different light, and to rediscover the historical and contemporary spaces that form the Mother City. With the use of photography, stage, film and dance, Blueprint will combine these aspects with the architecture of the city to create a new way of appreciating the concrete jungle and the human form.

The showpiece is directed and choreographed by Louise Coetzer.

Bicycle Empowerment Network with Freedom Ride, World Design Capital 2014 and FNB present The FNB Freedom Ride Cape Town is a cycling event that is open to the public. The Freedom Ride is a 27km social ride in and around the streets of Cape Town in honour of Mandela’s life and legacy. The route will consist of the city’s heritage and culture, urban structures and the history behind each area.

Participation is free but registration is important. All ages are welcome to take part on the ride. Participants are encouraged to donate towards the Bicycle Empowerment Centre in Langa.

TEDx Cape Town is a program created that consists of local, self-organised events that allows people to share a TED-like experience with other people, and to encourage discussion and connection between the people. The theme for the TEDx talk is “Design Your thinking” and the focus will be individual perceptions and filters.

Venue: City Hall

PechaKucha – in Japanese means chit chat – is an event that allows young designers to come together, network and display their work to the public. This event will take place in the evening and it will feature 9 speakers. PechaKucha provides itself on getting to the point so the format includes 20 slides – each slide is on display for 20 seconds – giving presenters 6 minutes 40 seconds to speak on their topic of choice.
PechaKucha Night is free for all attendees.
