“Waving Flag” musician K’Naan coming to Cape Town

Have you heard the awesome 2010 FIFA World Cup™ song, Waving Flag, by Somalian musician, K’Naan? If not, watch the video above.

Some might’ve first heard it in a recent Coca-Cola television commercial. Two African customs officials stop a Coca-Cola truck at a border post. They open the truck to search it, and, to their amazement, discover that it is transporting the FIFA World Cup™ trophy. While the oblivious truck driver stands outside looking worried, the two officials and their dog dance and celebrate to the sounds of K’Naan’s Waving Flag.

Within the next few weeks, you will be able to hear that song performed live in Cape Town. K’Naan is among the many artists who will take the stage at the FIFA Fan Fest™ in Grand Parade, performing on June 29.

K’Naan’s full name is Keinan Abdi Warsame. According to Wikipedia, the 32-year-old comes from a family of highly respected musicians and poets. Having lived through the civil war during his childhood years in Somalia, he moved to New York at the age of 13. “There, K’naan began learning English, partly by listening to hip hop albums by artists like Nas and Rakim,” states Wikipedia.

Waving Flag is a feel-good, catchy song that will appeal to all generations and cultures. K’Naan is a brilliant example of the musical talent that exists in Africa and those who see him perform in Cape Town will no doubt give him and his backing musicians the applause they deserve.

The lyrics for the World Cup version of Waving Flag are as follows:

Give me freedom, give me fire, give me reason, take me higher
See the champions take the field now, you define us, make us feel proud
In the streets our head are liftin’, as we lose our inhibition
Celebration, it surrounds us, every nation’s all around us
Singin’ forever young, singin’ songs underneath the sun
Let’s rejoice in the beautiful game
And together at the end of the day

We all say -

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me “Freedom”, just like a waving flag

And then it goes back -
And then it goes back -
And then it goes back -
And then it goes back
