Visiting Gugulethu – Flickr pic of the day

This photograph of a street in Gugulethu was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Out_In_Africa.

Says Out_In_Africa, “I wanted to do a township tour for such a long time and when Phumla invited us to Gugulethu and offered to be our informal tour guide, I jumped at the opportunity.

“Phumla is a dentist chair assistant and lives in Gugulethu with her son. On our arrival, we were entertained by Phumla’s many friends, invited into their shacks and we drank homemade beer in one of the homes. Although the community is very poor, I found that the friendship among the people of Gugulethu is very strong; they care and support one another, even if it is in very small ways. In every street and shack, people smiled and invited us in to share the little they had.

“After our tour we had lunch at Mzoli’s, the place to be in Cape Town. The meat was fantastic as well as the vibe.

“We left Gugu with a great deal of sadness and once again realised how blessed we are, and how much there is to do in these poor communities.

“God bless Africa and Gugulethu!”
