University of Cape Town – Flickr pic of the day

This image of the University of Cape Town, South Africa’s oldest university, was taken by Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Richard Tanswell aka richiesoft.

The University of Cape Town – known throughout South Africa as “UCT” – was founded in 1829 as the South African College, a high school for boys. It is one of Africa’s most prestigious universities, and is situated in beautiful old buildings high on the slopes of Devil’s Peak with impressive views out over the Cape Flats, towards Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

“I had a few weeks holiday in Cape Town with friends, and within minutes of landing there I fell in love with the place and the unique history of South Africa,” says Richard.

“We stayed for part of our trip on the university campus and explored the area well. This photograph was taken on approaching the main university building. The colours and architecture of the university buildings are amazing and are in real contrast to the green plants around them and the mountain behind,” he continues.
