Top places to be in Simon’s Town

Cape Town is one of the most fascinating destinations in … the world! The sun, surf, sea and of course the mountain are all iconic attractions, but make your way down the eastern side of the peninsula and you’ll find yourself in Simon’s Town.

Home of the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy, the town really has a lot to offer - just steep yourself in it's history. Not only will you come across one if its more famous residents, Just Nuisance, you'll fall in love with quaint places of interest and people.

Bed & breakfasts, hotels, camping sites and backpackers make Simon’s Town the ideal tourist or holiday destination. There is plenty of accommodation  and it’s relatively close to the more common Cape Town tourist attractions.

Getting around is also pretty easy with a comprehensive public transport system. You can take the Metrorail train which departs from Cape Town station and follows a scenic rail route through the southern suburbs all the to it's final destination, Simon's Town.

If you'd prefer a more personalised way to get around, you'd enjoy the many tours on offer. HGTS Tours offers private or group tours all over Cape Town and since Simon’s Town is a tourist destination, there are many more adventures to be had and sites to be seen:

• Boat Trips with the Simon's Town Boat Company

• Deep Sea Fishing with Big Blue Fishing Charters or Two Ocean's Sport Fishing Charters

• Kayaking with Sea Kayak Tours

To get the adrenalin pumping you could try shark cage diving with Apex Shark Expiditions, African Shark eco-charters or Shark Explorers.

But sometimes the perfect holiday doesn't involve doing something. If you prefer the more relaxed approach to vacationing, perhaps a visit to Boulders Beach, relaxing in the sun or mingling with peguins is right up your alley. Come at the right time of the year and you can expereince the Penguin or Spring Festival – contact the Simon's Town Visitor's Centre ( simonstown@capetown.travel or call 021 786 8440) to find out if festival dates fit into your holiday schedule.

The Just Nuisance Market or a tour of the naval musuem is a great way to relax for both locals and tourists alike.

So next time you're in Cape Town, and you find yourself wanting to explore off the beaten path, hop on a train and make your way down to Simon's Town – everybody won't know your name, but the warmth of the people will make you feel welcome, the adeventures are waiting and the sights will take your breath away!
