The magic of The Nutcracker on Ice at the Artscape Theatre Centre
The enchanting Imperial Ice Stars production, The Nutcracker on Ice, is currently running at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town.
It is an enticing mix of ice-skating, acrobatics and Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. From the phenomenal set designs, which were computer-generated before construction, to the unbelievable transformation of the Artscape Opera House stage into a large ice rink and the world-renowned cast, this charming tale transports you to a magical world.
The Nutcracker ballet was first staged in Russia in 1892 and is a well loved and familiar tale, now transformed by ice skating element. Anastasia Ignatyeva plays the lead, Maria and enchants audiences with her lithe frame and seemingly effortless dancing. She is perfectly matched by the impossibly handsome and athletic Nutcracker Prince, Bogdan Berezenko.
The sleight of hand mastery of Maria’s godfather Drosselmeyer, played by Vadim Yarkov, adds to the surrealism of the performance while the special effects will please even the most cynical audience member.
The ensemble cast is as alluring as the leads with the Arabian dancers being a particular crowd pleaser.
At the heart of this exquisite tale, of course, is the unfolding love story between Marie and her Prince. As they twirl and whirl their way on the ice and away from the nefarious Mouse King and his minions, and hold court with the Sugar Plum Fairy, this amazing production reinforces the classic fairytale lesson we adore: the magic of true love can solve any problem.
Fall in love with this modern twist on a timeless tale. Event has been closed. Was brought to you by Pieter Toerien, which runs until February 12, 2012, at Computicket.
