The Big Issue – Flickr pic of the day
Nick says, “A typical Cape Town city street scene – one of the many people who sell The Big Issue to support themselves. This was the end of a hot and windy day and this lady no doubt was pretty tired from being out. She’s sheltering herself from the wind by sitting behind a street sign, but still managing to hold her magazine up to passing cars.
“What do I like about photography in Cape Town? I guess the huge variety of themes that are available to shoot. We have a range of urban subjects, from the poor to the pretty people on the beaches, to fantastic nature and scenery, great sports events, the sea ... I could go on and on! The main challenge is finding time to get out and shoot!” he continues.
The Big Issue is a non-profit organisation aimed at job creation. The organisation was launched in Cape Town in 1996 and publishes a general interest magazine sold by homeless, unemployed and socially excluded people.
If you are looking for a quality holiday during which you can make a difference to impoverished communities, Cape Town is ideal. In addition, with Cape Town’s abundant nature and wildlife, there are opportunities to get involved with organisations concerned with the environment.
