South Africa as a country has a rich wine history dating back to 1659 when it is said, Jan van Riebeeck produced the first recorded wine. Traditions have been passed down through generations and today Constantia, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Fanschhoek and Worcester serve as some of the better known wine regions, with many more producing wines acknowledged as among the best around the world!

But, when comes to fine dining and fine wine, there’s no better place to enjoy both than in the Mother City and surrounds. Not only does Cape Town serve as the hub of the various wine routes, it boasts some of best places to enjoy a delectable glass of wine.

In no particular order, here are a few:

De Grendel Restaurant
A mere 15-minute drive from Cape Town this restaurant serves modern south African cuisine with the vast array of  Durbanville wines.

BBQUES at Groot Constantia
For a more casual take on wine dining, why not try BBQUES at Groot Constantia. It is described as a saucy new Southwestern-style restaurant that pairs the Groot Constantia estate’s wines with down-home revelry.

Terroir Restaurant
Set on the De Zalze golf course, Terroir is the perfect setting for a long indulgent lunch, intimate dinner or simply enjoying the estate wines.

Haute Cabrière Restaurant
Franschhoek is wine country at its best and Haute Cabrière as a wine estate boasts a playful yet powerful approach to wine. The restaurant, of the same name, adheres to this fun-loving, with punch mentality.

There are so many restaurants that we could go on for days. But whether you enjoy red, white or sparkling, you now know for sure that in Cape Town, you’re in the right city to savour your glass of choice.
