The season at Maynardville’s Open-Air Theatre is well under way and the Shakespeare offering for 2011 is The Taming of the Shrew, from Artscape, which opens on Saturday January 15.
The cast includes award-winning actress Anthea Thompson as Katharina and Grant Swanby – who plays Ryno Broekhuisen in Isidingo – as Petruchio.
The Roy Sargeant-directed production promises a contemporary, dignified edge to the risque perennial. The play-within-a-dream begins with characteristic trickery, and develops into a courtship by a Verona nobleman determined to win the heart of the obstreperous Katherina. The shrew finally succumbs to Petruchio’s charms, which are more a form of psychological bullying, resulting in her eventual “taming”.
This is a special production for Maynardville, which first staged The Taming of the Shrew in 1956, soon after the theatre’s inception As usual, arrive early with your own picnic basket filled with wine and foodie treats from home and enjoy supper on the grass at the park next door.
