Sunflowers at sunset – Flickr pic of the day
John says, “This sunflower photo was taken in a field on the Spes Bona road near Durbanville. I normally drive home from work through the Durbanville farmlands as I find it a lot less stressful than the busy highways. This is also when I look around for beautiful, cloudy skies and photo opportunities.
“On this particular day early in January this year, I spotted some beautiful cloud cover and immediately contacted my Flickr buddy, Paul Bruins, to join me for a quick photo shoot at one of our favourite photography spots in Durbanville – a farm dam on Spes Bona Road.
“After spending about 10 minutes shooting at the dam, we decided to move along to another dam further down the road. It was on our way there that we came across this small field of sunflowers. The light was just perfect and the sunflowers were behaving themselves very well! I reckon both of us must have taken close to 100 photos each. For most of the time I could not see Paul, as he was sitting flat on his bum, right in the middle of the field, trying to capture a really interesting perspective.
“I went back a few days later to see if I could improve on my initial efforts, but was so disappointed when all I found was a field of dry, dead sunflowers. This just showed me how important it is to be in the right place at the right time, and, of course, a little luck also helps!” he continues.
