StreetSmart initiative popular in Cape Town
Members of the hospitality industry recently attended a special ceremony at the Salesian Institute during which over R400 000 was handed over to non-governmental organisations that work with street children in Cape Town and its surrounds. This money was all raised by StreetSmart, a conduit fundraising initiative that partners with city restaurants and diners to add a minimum donation of R5 to every bill, in the name of ensuring that street children live a more viable life in society. It goes into a variety of skills training, reunification and empowerment projects in this regard.
A number of local restaurants participate in this noble initiative, and we should encourage more city restaurants and local and international diners to support.
There’s no denying that Capetonians love to eat out and the city is full of culinary delights. Next time you’re out and about (and hungry), make sure you stop by a StreetSmart restaurant and make a worthwhile contribution to someone else’s life. Check out www.streetsmartsa.org.za for a list of participating restaurants.
