The popular Super 14 rugby tournament, featuring regional teams from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, kicks off this weekend. Cape Town’s local team, The Stomers, will begin their campaign against the Lions at Ellis Park in Johannesburg tomorrow. The match starts at 17h00.

World-class new signings Bryan Habana and Jaques Fourie will both play their first Super 14 matches for the Stormers, and will line up with fellow Springboks Peter Grant, Andries Bekker and captain, Schalk Burger.

Last weekend the Stormers beat a Boland invitational team 47-13 during the Cape Town Rugby Festival at Cape Town Stadium.

The Stormers were generally below par in that fixture, making numerous unforced handling errors, which will be punished at Super 14 level.

This season the Stormers will be without last year’s captain and stalwart loose-forward, Luke Watson, who is now playing for Bath in the UK. While Watson’s leadership and creative excellence will be sorely missed, 50-test veteran Burger is a more than able replacement.

The Lions feature several exciting players in their back line, such as former Stormers players Earl Rose and Tonderai Chavanga, while much of the focus during this match will be on former All Black flyhalf Carlos Spencer, who will be making his Lions debut.

Next weekend the Stormers will play the Waratahs at Newlands; it’s well worth buying your tickets as soon as possible.
