South African fur seals – Flickr pic of the day

This stunning image of South African fur seals (previously known as Cape fur seals) in Hout Bay was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Damien du Toit aka coda.

Damien says, “The chap floating on the surface had real attitude – he snarled at us a couple of times.”

The ocean and small islands around Cape Town are teeming with life.

Seal Island is a small, rocky outcrop named for the many seals that have made it their home. Take a boat trip to the island to see them in their natural environment, but beware of the great white sharks that like to visit the island too.

Head for Hout Bay Harbour, from which you can take a short trip around Duiker Island, home to a big colony of South African fur seals. Watch them bask on the rocks or frolic in the freezing water of the Atlantic – as Damien has captured so beautifully here.

Do you have images of Cape Town you’d like to share with us? We’d love you to join the Cape Town. Live it. Love it. Flickr group!
