He is to Cape Town, South Africa what the Naked Chef Jamie Oliver is to London (with more clothing, naturally)… and we are proud to call top chef Reuben Riffel one of our own.

Raised in the French- inspired Franschhoek Winelands, this gourmet whiz kid has made his mark on the culinary world with three successful Reuben’s restaurants - one in Franschhoek, the One&Only Cape Town and another in Robertson. And although born and raised in Franschhoek, Reuben has developed a deep affinity for all things Capetonian.

A proud ambassador for Cape Town Tourism and Thompson Holidays’ #LoveCapeTown City Breaks programme, Reuben shared his top reasons to love his adopted hometown with us:

What are your top 3 things to do in Cape Town?

I enjoy strolling through the City Centre, exploring new restaurants, and visiting the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.

What is your hidden gem in Cape Town?

It would have to be the delicious Buratta restaurant at the Old Biscuit Mill.

What do you miss about the Mother City when you’re away?

Table Mountain, our wonder of nature.

What is the most surprising thing you’ve recently learnt about Cape Town?

The level of creativity and vibrancy amongst our local designers astounds me. It’s little wonder our hometown was named World Design Capital 2014.

How does Cape Town inspire you?

The diverse selection of people who live, work and visit Cape Town inspire me.

What is your all-time favourite “Capetonian” meal?

Hmmm, that’s a difficult one… if I had to choose, it would be a gatsby, a dish of Bokaap Denningvleis or oysters in Camps Bay.
