Salt River market – Flickr pic of the day
Murray says, “This photo of Zubaida and her son Yuthman was taken on a quiet Saturday at the Salt River fresh produce market where Zubaida’s family has owned a fruit and veg stall for many years.
“While I was there, I told one of their long-time customers that I was exploring the effects of changing patterns of consumption in Cape Town. ‘You want to know about changing patterns?’ he asked me, and gestured across the empty parking lot where, just a decade ago, there had been a thriving market.
“These days, I was told, Zubaida’s family has lost most of their customers to supermarkets and shopping malls.
“The residents of Salt River could not have been more welcoming to me, and I’d take the warmth and hospitality of Zubaida’s veggie stall over the cold, clinical efficiency of a supermarket any day of the week,” he continues.
