Rock dassie – Flickr pic of the day

This photograph was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. Flickr group member Menka Belgal.

Says Menka, "There were numerous Rock Dassies at Cape Point National Park scurrying under rocks, eating flowers and hiding in crevices. Other names for these critters are rock hyrax, rock rabbit, shephanim or Cape hyrax. If you approach them very quietly and carefully, they'll sit on the rocks posing for you. You can't walk up to them straight on to photograph them or they'll take off as they'll feel threathened. After a while I was able to get within a couple feet of this guy with a short lens without him flinching. Well, maybe he grunted a couple of warning sounds."
