Robben Island to Bloubergstrand – Flickr pic of the day
More than 100 swimmers plunged into the icy sea between Robben Island and Bloubergstrand for the 7.5km “Cadiz Vista Nova Freedom Swim” on Freedom Day last year. According to www.blouberg.co.za, the long-distance swim is intended to increase public awareness of the World Heritage Site and its political history. It also raises funds for a school for children with special needs.
Once “home” to South Africa’s most famous political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, Robben Island is one of South Africa’s most visited tourist attractions, and rightly so. Do not leave Cape Town without visiting the island – it is likely to be one of the highlights of your trip.
The Freedom Swim is scheduled to take place this year on April 25.
