Orange-breasted sunbird – Flickr pic of the day

This stunning picture of an orange-breasted sunbird at Kirstenbosch Gardens was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Alex Bond-Smith.

Alex says, “I am a keen bird, flower and landscape photographer, which stems from my passion for the mountains around Cape Town and the many hours I spend hiking and climbing in them. I often take one of my cameras on hikes in case a suitable photo opportunity presents itself.

“Another place to capture some rare flower and bird photos – without having to carry a lot of heavy camera equipment all the way up Table Mountain – is Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

“Last Saturday my wife Colleen, also a keen photographer, suggested we go to Kirstenbosch as we only had an hour or two available. I have only ever seen sunbirds of the double-collared variety there and never an orange-breasted sunbird. Last Saturday was the exception as there were dozens of them around and I was really lucky to capture a few on camera,” he continues.

Kirstenbosch was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2004 – the first botanical garden in the world to receive this honour.
