On an ordinary night, the nightlife in Cape Town is something to write home about. Add to the mix a whole city of people whose common goal is to bring in the New Year in style, and you’ve got something quite spectacular in store for you.

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a classy dinner under the stars or a whirlwind party. Here are Cape Town Tourism’s top five New Year’s parties in the Mother City:

1. Make love not war at La Med’s Full Moon New Year’s Eve Party

There are few better places to watch the last sunset of 2009 than at La Med in Clifton, looking out over the ocean with a drink in your hand and a fabulous party ahead of you. Dress in your hippy threads and dance the New Year in to the music of the 60s and 70s.

Tickets are R300 per person. See La Med’s website for more information.

2. Fun and fireworks at the Waterfront Rooftop New Year’s Eve Party

Head to the V&A Waterfront for the biggest party in town – the Waterfront Rooftop New Year’s Eve Party.

5FM’s Gareth Cliff will be the host for the night, and the party will feature artists such as 5FM’s Roger Goode and Erica Elle, as well as Chad Tyson, Pascal and Pearce, Gareth Devore, Gren Forte, Jono Styxx and the lovely Anthea.

Tickets cost between R360 and R530 and can be bought through Computicket.

3. A carnival of music at the new and improved Green Market Square

The 300-year-old Green Market Square offers a carnival of music and the party of a lifetime, with 12 live bands, 15 DJs, sax players, percussionists, dancers, entertainers and fire dancers.

The party starts at 19h00 and tickets cost R250-R290 per person.

Keep up your strength by tucking into a tasty selection of nachos, fajitas, burritos and chilli poppers.

The party starts at 20h00 and tickets are R90 per person.

5. Enjoy a classy dinner under the stars at The Greenhouse in Constantia

If you’d prefer a delicious dinner in a beautiful setting to a crazy party, take advantage of The Greenhouse’s New Year’s Eve dinner, where you can dine on their terrace under the stars – or indoors.
