Accolades for Cape Town continue to roll in. Following the recent announcement that Tjing Tjing bar was named one of The 10 Hottest New Bars Around The World by Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic has listed Muizenberg as one of its World's 20 Best Surf Towns. Cape Town has also previously been listed as one of The Lonely Planet‘s Ten Best Beach Cities 2011.

The World's 20 Best Surf Towns list not only profiles the surfing conditions of the various beaches, but also explores activities to do in the area, its social and community outreach programmes, where to stay and, of course, the best times to catch the next big wave.

Writer Tetsuhiko Endo describes what makes a great surf town: "A great surf town is the nearly magical sum of consistent waves, inviting accommodation, friendly locals, fun nightlife, delicious food, and plenty of activities should the ocean go flat. The following is a list of the world's best surf towns, picked not necessarily because they are home to the best waves, but because the sum of their parts makes them inviting for locals and visitors alike. Plus, for each town, locals tell us where to eat, stay, and play."

It seems Muizenberg fits the criteria perfectly.

Muizenberg is a popular spot, attracting local and international visitors as the water on its coast is much warmer than that on the Atlantic Coast. It's still pretty cold, though. Recognisable by its brightly coloured beach huts, there are a variety of surf and adventure operators, restaurants, coffee shops and apartments located along the main beach.

There is also a train ride known as “The Southern Line”, which runs from Cape Town to Simon’s Town. Contact Cape Town Tourism’s Muizenberg Visitor Information Centre, conveniently located at the Pavilion on the main beach, to assist you in booking accommodation, activities and transport. The friendly team will provide you with the local knowledge, maps, brochures and what’s-on information for any time of year. They’ll also make bookings for you at no cost.
