Are you interested in art and crafts? Would you like to spend a little time exploring one of Cape Town’s most unique venues? Whether you’re a visitor or a local, Montebello Design Centre in Newlands has much to offer you.
The centre is situated in the historic farm buildings of Montebello in Newlands, approximately half-way between Rhodes Memorial and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The buildings and land have a colourful history, being the origin of Ohlssons Brewery and Continental China.
Montebello is a non-profit development project aimed at promoting good local design and using craft for job creation. Visitors are most welcome to explore this unique project and visit the studios and workshops in the peaceful, tree-lined grounds.
There are approximately 20 craft production, teaching and design studios (jewellery, ceramics, weaving, beading, wood sculpture, African musical instruments, alien vegetation furniture, textiles, print-making, painting, special interest maps, fine art books and a forge).
There are two shops – the Montebello Shop – specialising in good local craft and design, offering a wide range of products made on site and items produced through various outreach programmes; and Mielie – specialising in textile products handmade from re-cycled materials.
The Greenhouse nursery is a tranquil retreat specialising in indigenous plants; it also offers a landscaping service.
The Gardener’s Cottage restaurant and tea garden is open for breakfasts, lunches and teas, and Kwalapa Organic Wholefoods sells organic food items and food-related products.
