Mandela Day 2012 – Flickr pic of the day
The statue of Nelson Mandela stands in Nobel Square and is one of a set of four honouring South Africa's four Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The sculptures stand in the form of a crescent with Table Mountain in the background.
On July 18, 1918, former president of South Africa, Nobel laureate and humanitarian Nelson Mandela was born in the Transkei and today, on July 18, 2012, he turns 94 years old.
Today people around the world celebrate his birthday, also known as Nelson Mandela International Day, by giving 67 minutes of their time to support a charity or serve their local communities.
