Manchester United in Cape Town – Ajax CT fixture confirmed
There are many reasons to visit Cape Town, and one of them is getting another opportunity to see one of the world’s biggest football clubs play the beautiful game against a local side.
Local media reports are abuzz with the announcement that Ajax Cape Town and Manchester United will be locking horns in a high-profile friendly at Cape Town Stadium on July 21, as part of the English team's 2012 pre-season tour, which will also take place in China.
Grant Pascoe, Executive Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, confirmed that the Red Devils are on their way.
I have to say that a shiver has been working its way up and down my spine at the thought of seeing the English premiership giants — said to be the best supported team in the world — in the flesh at a stadium that matches their status in every way.
Ever since attending a couple of the 2010 World Cup soccer matches in Cape Town I’ve been looking forward to returning to Cape Town Stadium when it is packed to the rafters and the vuvuzelas are trumpeting around the ground.
The atmosphere at those matches was one to savour, and the hope is that Manchester United can take us back to those giddy days of football mania, even if just for a day. The reality is, if they can’t, then no football club can.
Now we all know the European Championships are underway, so the likelihood is the Manchester United team that takes the field may be shorn of a few of its household names. But personally I love to see what the next generation of professional footballers has to offer.
Football fans from Europe and the British Isles who happen to be visiting the Mother City in mid-July, make sure you get tickets to the game. It’s not often you get the chance to see your team play in the off-season while you are on holiday.
What better way to finish a day that could start with a trip up Table Mountain, one of the world’s New7Wonders of Nature, and end with a close encounter with the Red Devils – a footballing wonder if ever there was one.
So football fans please get ready for a night to remember – and partners who feel they might be a little neglected that evening, forgive us…. The footballing gods have bestowed on us a rare gift, and it would be rude to turn our back on it.
The game kicks off at 15h00 at the Cape Town Stadium on July 21, 2012. Visit www.ajaxct.com for more information.
