There are 600 shops in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban that pull out all the stops to have items in line with the Met theme. Made to Fly is a call for punters to break the rules of fashion, to make outfits from something unique and to wear something which would not traditionally be worn. Many designers bring out ranges in line with the yearly theme.

The Met – Cape Town's premier horse race, and one of the city's favourite social and fashion occasions – takes place on Saturday, February 2 at the Kenilworth Racecourse and 50 000 people, many dressed in keeping with the theme, are expected to stream through the gates.

More than 2 500 people are catered for in the VIP area, where marquees are erected in the middle of the track.

One of the best places to show off your iconic outfit will be at the J&B Met Oasis, where some of the country's hippest young movers and shakers will be hanging out with TV stars and fashion icons.

It will cost R390 to get a pass to the Oasis, which will let you hang out with celebrities who, as tradition dictates, will be strutting their stuff in fine style. The ticket will also get you reserved parking, racecourse entry and a ticket to the official J&B Met after-party.

J&B's unique heritage was the inspiration for the Made to Fly theme, with its history of challenging convention – from its bright yellow label and green bottle, to its unique blend of 42 whiskies.

The Met is one of the biggest outdoor social events in Cape Town, more than 50 000 people make their way to the Kenilworth Racecourse to enjoy the fashion, the vibe, and of course the horse race, where 16 of the country's top racehorses compete over 2 000m for a stake of R2.5-million.

Tickets for the J&B Met cost R185 and are available through iTickets.co.za, designated Gold Circle tote offices around Cape Town and at the reception offices of the Kenilworth Racecourse. Ticket enquires can be made by calling the Kenilworth Racecourse on +27 (0)21 700 1600.
