The first night of the 2011 Loerie Awards at the Cape Town International Convention Centre was a classy occasion, with 1 500 people gathering to celebrate South Africa’s finest print, radio and outdoor advertisements.
Legendary South African newsreader, Riaan Cruywagen, received a standing ovation when he took the stage to host the event. Cruywagen, who has been reading the news ever since South Africa had television in 1975, has a huge cult following and boosted his popularity even further with his role in the 2011 Loerie Awards promotional video.
The theme for the 2011 Loerie Awards is “Don’t hate, create,” which promotes the thinking that advertising and brand communication isn’t just about achieving commercial goals.
The ceremony was slick and upbeat, serving as a reminder of the abundance of talent the South African creative industry has to boast about.
The two Grand Prix winners on the night were Ogilvy Cape Town for their live activations entry for Volkswagen, entitled Marching Band, and Net#Work BBDO for their radio commercial campaign for Mercedes-Benz, entitled New Friends.
