Libyan flags flew ecstatically this weekend after a nerve-racking finish to the African Nations Championship (CHAN), after Ghana threatened an improbable comeback during the penalty shootout. After a gruelling match dominated by effective defence, the champions streaked ahead 3-0, almost putting victory beyond doubt, only to see Ghana level the scores at 3-3.
Pressure built around Cape Town Stadium as the Ghanaian goal keeper, Stephen Adams, revved up the partisan crowd behind the goal mouth, but midfielder Ahmed El Trbi kept his cool and scored for Libya to bring the scores to 4-3.
After placing his forehead to the ground, Libyan goal keeper Mohamed Abdaula stepped into the cauldron as his teammates watched from their knees on the half-way line. The intensity mounted as Tijani Joshua stepped up and erupted as he put it wide, breaking Ghanaian hearts and sending the Libyans into sprinting into the crowd.
Cape Town Tourism congratulates Libya on a superb performance throughout the tournament, and for winning the championship title. Here are some of our favourite photos from the game Libya v Ghana on Saturday 1 February 2014.
