Kite surfing – Flickr pic of the day

This image of South African summer was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Alex Bamford aka the big bambooly.

Alex says, “I was out with a location finder for an advertising shoot, being ushered back into the bus, when I spotted these kite surfers on the beach. I just loved the mixture of the heavy shadows, the near-silhouettes and the rich colour shining through the kites.

“The light in Cape Town is amazing and, along with the amazing range of landscapes, is the reason we’d flown all the way from London to shoot there. Now that I’m back in cold and dreary London, Cape Town and the summer feel a long way off,” he continues.

The best place to go kite surfing in Cape Town is Blouberg Beach. The Cape’s southeasterly winds have a lot to do with kite surfing – the most popular activity on the beach.

With a wide, spacious stretch of sand (Dolphin Beach, a perfect launch pad), 10-30 knot winds and unbelievable views of Table Mountain, it’s not surprising that this place attracts foreign visitors to enjoy a kite-surfing safari.

Contact Cape Town Tourism’s Blaauwberg Visitor Information Centre (+27 21 521 1080) for recommendations on accredited kite surfing operators, guides and local accommodation.
