The 2013 leg of the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts is hotter than ever, featuring performers such as Toya Delazy, The Parlotones, Mi Casa and local crowd favourites Goldfish and Freshlyground. If you are going to be in Cape Town anytime between now and April, keep a Sunday afternoon free to go to one of these gigs.
The Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts are already under way and so far there have been performances by the likes of Daniel Bedingfield and Mango Groove, with Prime Circle due to take the stage this Sunday. If you're looking for a New Year party, Hugh Masekela and Hot Water will be providing the entertainment at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the venue for all the concerts.
I'm pretty fussy about my live music, and have to say that Goldfish are right up there with the Chemical Brothers and Prodigy as the best I've seen. And it's not just Cape Town locals who agree with me; these guys have a huge fan base around the world and spend a lot of time in Ibiza due to the demand for their services there. They are the real deal, they play their instruments live when they perform and it always sounds bloody good.
Freshlyground became properly famous when they teamed up with Shakira to record Waka Waka, the theme song for the FIFA 2010 World Cup South Africa. They have been a world-class act far longer than that, though, and you can feel the enthusiasm is just as strong every time they perform. Zolani Mahola's voice is one of the purest of our generation and it's such a pleasue to listen to live, particularly when the band are performing the hit song I'd Like.
Toya de Lazy will be performing at the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts on January 27
Toya Delazy is new to the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, and she's going to get the crowd going big time. When her songs first hit radio stations few people knew that the beautiful voice they were hearing belonged to a South African, and still only a few people know that she's actually a princess – a direct descendent of King Shaka. However, anyone who has seen her perform knows that she is one funky lady and the success of her singles Love is in the Air and Pump it On is much deserved.
