Khayelitsha portrait – Flickr pic of the day
Mark says, “Last weekend I went to Khayelitsha for the first time, with a friend. Camera in hand, I was eager to explore, but was unsure about how I would fit into an environment that seemed a million miles away from my comfort zone.
“My uncertainty lasted a quarter of a block, thanks to the overwhelming acceptance of the community. At the first shebeen we passed, the owner invited us in to get a feel for traditional culture.
“The man in this image was sitting around with a group of friends, drinking traditional beer out of an old paint tin. We were shown where the women sit while the men are drinking and given a peek into the bubbling pots in the kitchen.
“We spent the afternoon walking the streets, chatting to the shop keepers and taking pictures of the vibrantly coloured houses. Khayelitsha is an exciting place, filled with residents who welcome you into their lives with open arms. It was an amazing Saturday afternoon and I will definitely be heading back for more.”
