Those attending the J&B Met at Cape Town’s Kenilworth Racecourse on January 29 are running out of time to prepare their outfits. The theme this year is “larger than life”, allowing for broad interpretation.

The J&B Met is arguably the biggest fashion event in South Africa, with more than 50 000 people dressing up to the max for the prestigious horse race.

The traditional J&B Most Elegant Couple competition will be held at 15h00 on the day. The celebrity judges include television personalities Michael Mol, Jeannie D and Jo-Ann Strauss, as well as surfing sensation Roxy Louw and Olympic swimmer Ryk Neethling. First prize is a travel voucher worth R25 000, a beauty hamper worth R15 000 and two pairs of POLICE sunglasses valued at around R2 000 each.

The are also considerable prizes for second-, third- and fourth-placed couples, while those adjudged Best Themed Couple will win a two-night safari in the Kruger National Park, valued at more than R32 000.

Fashion bloggers are predicting lots of large accessories such as earrings for the ladies and tall hats for the gentlemen. Frilly and puffy dresses are likely to feature prominently. Sunglasses will most likely be essential given Cape Town’s sunny summer weather and this year, bigger certainly is better.

The Pantone colour of the year for 2011 is honeysuckle, a reddish pink. Other colours that fashion blogs are giving the thumbs up this summer include aqua green, as well as inky blues and purples.

Cape Town boasts a large range of boutique fashion stores specialising in exclusive outfits for events such as the J&B Met. A number of these stores are located on the popular Long Street. You can pick up a copy of the Cape Town Design Route Map at the Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information Centre in Berg Street, from which you can begin to plan your fashion quest.

Various stores around Cape Town are having post-Christmas sales, and shoppers should consider dropping by the V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk and Cavendish Square for deals.

Those attending the J&B Met are invited to submit their photos of the event to the Cape Town. Live it. Love it. Flickr group and to enter their “people photos” into the Capture Summer Photography Competition.

Larger than life was the title of a popular song released by the Backstreet Boys in 1999. Anyone wanting to use this for outfit inspiration can check out the music video below.
